Version and edition
- Standard suits physical servers and small virtual environments: it allows two virtual machines per licensed host. Examples: Windows Server 2022 Standard and Windows Server 2019 Standard.
- Datacenter is for heavily virtualised hosts: unlimited virtual machines and extra storage and networking features. Examples: Windows Server 2022 Datacenter and Windows Server 2019 Datacenter.
- Choose the version by lifecycle: Server 2022 has support until October 2031 and Server 2019 until January 2029. Older releases (2012 and 2008) are for legacy workloads only — Microsoft's support for them has ended.

Remember that servers also need Client Access Licenses (CALs) for the users or devices that connect, and remote desktop sessions need RDS CALs. If you are unsure what your setup requires, talk to us before buying.
Planning your deployment
Windows Server 2022 and 2019 require a 64-bit processor, adequate RAM for the roles you plan to run (at least 2 GB with Desktop Experience, more in practice) and compatible storage and network adapters. Activating Windows Server
- Install Windows Server and sign in as administrator.
- Open Settings → Activation (or run
slmgr /ipkfrom an elevated prompt) and enter the key. - Activate over the internet, or by phone if the server is offline.

What is the difference between Standard and Datacenter?
Standard allows two virtual machines per licensed host and suits physical servers and small virtual setups. Datacenter allows unlimited virtual machines and adds advanced storage and networking features for heavily virtualised hosts.
Do I need CALs as well as a server key?
Yes. Client Access Licenses are required for users or devices that access the server, and Remote Desktop Services needs RDS CALs on top. Tell us how many people connect and we will help you work out what you need.
